@Keyhole, a long interview w/ Molly Gaudry re: Harper Perennial deal, Year of the Liquidator, Scorch Atlas, etc. Thanks Molly!
The new Flaming Lips sounds like Oneida. I'm not sure yet if this is a good thing, but it seems better for them somehow.
The new Themselves has me excited, downloading now. I think I am irretrievably stuck listening to rap for the rest of my life, except in small spurts of other, as it is the only music that still innovates, while still repeating itself. In this way it is like Gordon Lish.
I am going to be lecturing on Three 6 Mafia and Gordon Lish and why Chekhov is bad advice at the New College of Florida next month.
Reread the proof of Kristina's book last night: it is fucking amazing. There is no other book that reads like this book. I can't wait to get it into people's hands. We're aiming at Halloween, but may be a couple days late due to fucking with the printers. The cover is bright red and came in burgundy. Proofs are smart.
If you are in Atlanta, Heather Christle and Chris Deweese are reading at Beep Beep on Thursday at 700. You should come. They are both hilarious and amazing. Heather's book just came out from Octopus. I am going to buy it from her there.
After &now I have decided to spend all of October and November focusing only on perfecting the novel, which is due in December or something. Editing is kind of fun and kind of gritty. Feels like the book is coming even more alive. Feels like there are still mirrors hidden in it that I have to turn around and face the other way in the paper.
Book inside a book.
I kind of want to call the novel Ever also. Can I do that? Can I just keep writing Ever for the rest of my life, over and over again?
This download needs to hurry up.
I tricked Apple into replacing the battery on my laptop after 380 cycles, 15 months later. I didn't know their coverage of the battery supposedly stops after 300 cycles. If your battery has changed at all in quality and you have Apple Care and you are nearing 300 cycles you should call and make them replace it.
There is a big difference between nice and kind. I like to think I'm kind.

The Copy Family
HarperPerennial recently launched 52 Stories, publishing one story a week all year. This week they are running my 'The Copy Family' which is an excerpt from the beginning of the novel I wrote in 10 days last year, WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU. Check it out: The Copy Family.
Here is a wonderful behind the scenes short about Gaspar Noe's editing of IRREVERSIBLE, one of the most wonderful capturings of space and aura ever **violence warning** **I just said wonderful twice**:
I like coffee and poker.
I am about to reread Johannes Goransson's Aase Berg translation 'With Deer' out now from Black Ocean, which feels like standing in a flesh cabinet breathing dirty sugar.

WHERE AM I excerpt @ Pequin
There is a new excerpt from my 10 day novel, WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU, now live at Pequin >>>> The Son's Book
It is very short and random, more a moment than a 'scene,' and fairly unlike most of the novel (ie: this one and this one) though all of the novel's many little sections are pretty different from one another, while still remaining somewhat narrative I think. Somewhat.

I am reading the Dalkey Archive rerelease version of Stanley Crawford's THE LOG OF THE S.S. THE MRS. UNGUENTINE and so far it is one of the most unexpected and refreshing things I have read in a long time. I mean it is goddamn amazing.
It has a new afterword by Ben Marcus.
I wonder if Ben Marcus has a new book somewhere forthcoming?
I wonder if I could get Ben Marcus to blurb EVER? I think I am also going to try to dig up David Markson.
I think too much.
Bookslut gave me a shoutout.
Lily Hoang's THE WOMAN DOWN THE HALL will debut later today or tomorrow, depending on certain things.
Time to begin writing something new so I can shut up some.

Auras or I am being retarded
Inundation is a day. I drank no coffee. There are 4 people gmail chatting me. I am getting txt msg'd. Phone sometimes rings but my voice can't go into it unless I hit it one certain way. My gmail tab is variating between inbox and the ___ says... of 3 different people. I am considering coffee at 11:30 pm because I feel like I got socked with a sock: sandwich eater.
Twice tonight I have posted a blog about Aura. It didn't feel right the way I had it and kept taking down. I am slurred a little. I don't think I can say what I mean the way I mean it and make sense to anyone even myself which would negate typing which would negate sitting in chair half-sweating because I took a bath and did not put on deodorant after and then began to sweat in the heat and put on deodorant and now feel disgusting in this weird shirt.
I am going to post parts of the earlier post of the blog to see if I can make sense out of it. My gmail IM is going nuts with the donk noise. I am going to mute it.
Oh I deleted the old one. Okay I'll try again. It is below. (I was going to edit and chop it up and fix things I'd thought but I feel removed.)
A thing I can't stop thinking about as I am putting final edits on this novel is how the presence of a popular and/or iconic entity effects the aura of a work. There are a couple of major instances in the book where well known names appear: not simply to be name-checked or made as a loose reference, but as a function in the book. For instance, these occurrences aren't used in a way like: "Jon went to Starbucks and bought a mocha Frapucchino." I think that kind of namecheck, brand insertion has been done and done to death. I wouldn't want to include that in new work. I am thinking more of the way an influence of other works colliding or being contained by other works and how that affects a work's reception.
For instance, I'm reading Michael Earl Craig's YES MASTER! right now. In it he has a poem where references are made to Tom Waits's ALICE and Klaus Kinski, and those images are used not as placeholders, but as things for the images in the poem to bounce off of. They accrue the energy or something. So there is the moment of recognition, and then the poem builds off that recognition, and molds it, and assumes the energy a little, rather than using the words to create the topography of the piece. The piece does not exploit the cultural reference, it rebends it. I think that's what I mean.
Another work that successfully uses these kind of ideas without exploiting them I think is Derek White's POSTE RESTANTE, which I have written about before. His book has figures like Johnny Rotten and Madonna and music references to bands like Love and Rockets, and they do not feel like sore thumbs, they seem to absorb the aura.
There are surely many books that also do what I'm talking about, but I can't think right now.
Though there are plenty of ways this kind of careering can leave a bad taste. The Starbucks example, for instance, where it serves no purpose except to be a place, or where it is done in a way that feels like a mimicry of what Delillo did in WHITE NOISE or what Bret Easton Ellis did, or what have you. I want to avoid these repercussions, but I think there is something still yet to be harnessed in the idea of what I've talked about on here a few times, and in the instances above, where you take a cultural figure and bend it to your uses, absorb its aura.
Culture worship, culture attention, culture look-at-me is ill-gotten, but we exist in this world and this world is made of these things, and these things have terrain, I think.
I'm thinking all of this now because the introduction to my novel, and another certain rather key section the book later on, includes a couple of these type things, where names of cultural icons are included (in my instance, they are people). In my instance they are important not because of topography, I think, but because of aura. There is a specific feedback caused by their presences, I think. And yet the majority of the book does not include these kind of terms, and stays in a more dreamlike, word-to-word kind of dreamlike rhythm. Does the introduction then throw the rest of the book off? As I'm getting close to finishing, I am starting to worry a little, though, that having those kind of things in key moments like an introduction could throw a reader off. Could put them in a mindframe where they are expecting these cultural references, and can not view the work on a word by word level, via which most of the book is built. (What's the difference between saying CREST and toothpaste? There is one. Sometimes I like one and sometimes I like the other. Even Cormac McCarthy says coke instead of soda.) I am wondering if I should go through and neutralize the elements so to speak, to render them more organic, though I know something would be lost if I did it. I still can't help but think about it.
Do I even care about this? I probably don't. I am overthinking, I know, because I worry, but I wonder what other people think about the function of these kind of energies.
I am sure in the end I will go with what I have created as it is, but I just want to continue to mull, and typing this out is actually making me feel better about it.
I will probably delete this post later, but if anyone has thoughts, think.
This is precisely why I do not sleep.

Nightmare, Novel, Allen Ginsberg
I am addicted to em-dashes. I have about half of a novella I was working on before the novel and it is stuffed end to end with those fuckers.
I am (I think) done with a good draft of the novel. Now.
Night before last I had the worst dream of my life. It lasted three days in dream time (though only about 2 hrs in real) and had thousands of scenes. The one scene I most vividly remember I was in a very large building with many floors that only had one glass elevator. Everyone knew something bad was happening to the air. Everyone was acting however they wanted as they thought the world was ending. My girlfriend was several floors up in my room. I knew men were doing things to her. I was trying to get on the elevator to go up and stop them but other people, including friends of mine, were intentionally jamming the controls so that they could keep me away. People all around me were beating the shit out of the walls and each other and breaking shit and taking shits and squealing and the building was huge and flat on the inside. My friends were laughing and sneering and they were waiting for their turn. I knew more of what they were doing but it is too disgusting to repeat.
The world did not end. Near the end of the dream I was given a reparations package containing $30.55 in loose change and a cookie sheet. There was a station outside my new shitty apartment manned by a small black man in a bellhop coat who gave me the paperwork I had to fill out to get the change. He was very polite. There was a small swimming pool right behind him. Then I was told to go pick up my car and they dropped me off in a lot where all the cars in the world had been relocated and I was supposed to find my car in the lot and it was very hot and I had a tricycle to ride. The lot went on forever in all directions, all cars in the light.
I think those are 2 scenes out of several thousands of scenes. I was trapped, and could not wake up and it all felt very real. I felt sick when I did finally wake up, really fully ill.
I swear the door just opened in the room where I am typing and there was no one there.
Adam Robinson is now offering a free copy of EL GREED by David NeSmith to the next 10 people who buy my chapbook from PUBLISHING GENIUS. I am still offering $1.50 toward the $4 price.
I watched I'M NOT THERE last night. I don't like Bob Dylan, but this movie was really good. Epic in a Scorsese way. It had Heath Ledger in it, that seemed somehow weird. Randomly, David Cross appears as Allen Ginsberg. He looks just like him. It made me laugh. I had to rewind it. Allen Ginsberg was the first writer who made me want to write. I am going to go read KADDISH again right now. It's been more than 10 years.

Interview with J'Lyn Chapman
My interview with J'Lyn Chapman, author of BEAR STORIES, is up at Bookslut.
Check it out and then buy her book. It is only $5 from Calamari.
Also, Jesse Ball's story from the last Paris Review is up on their website so you can read for free. THE EARLY DEATHS OF LUBECK, BRENNAN, HARP, AND CARR. I enjoyed the story quite a bit. It melds some kind of antiquated storyteller speak with Kafkaisms and weird injected musings such as this one:
They say that in a heavy storm one shouldn’t be beneath trees for fear of lightning. Also they say don’t go into an open field. This is very confusing, as, when I have on occasion been in a place of fields and trees during heavy rain and lightning, I have become completely confused. At what point do I stay away from the trees? At what point from the fields? Do I dig a hole in the ground? Do I need to keep a little shovel with me for rainstorms? In such a hole wouldn’t the rain collect and drown me? That’s not so much better, and in fact would be much the same because I have heard that the bodies of people killed by lightning are bloated in a similar way to those found after a drowning.
WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU now contains 47393 words. I have added 8000 words in revision, including a short appendix. More is slipping in through the cracks. I don't want to stop but I am going to try to keep as much of the original draft intact as possible. I am going to limit myself to finish by end of week, I think, though last night after reading a chapter of Joy Williams's THE CHANGELING (which is getting really fucking good), I blurted a 900 word chapter that seems essential to the book as a whole about an egg that gives the mother orgasms.

You can now order print versions of my chapbook PRETEND I AM THERE BUT VERY LITTLE via Publishing Genius, or you can use the files on the site to print your own for free. It's $4 on the site or something. That is cheap.
I have read Kevin Wilson's THE DEAD SISTER HANDBOOK from Diagram 6.1 countless times in the past week. I just kind of leave it open and stare at it. Another instance of employing cultural objects imbued with some kind of transmutative sensing. I would like to make an anthology of those kind of texts.
Nearly finished redrafting WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU. Is that the name? The first redraft added several thousand words. There are now 43664 words. I only deleted two paragraphs from the original writing. Brief sections are coming out at Wigleaf, Pequin and Brian Foley's brand new forthcoming web journal SIR!, and I think a couple other places. I am still thinking about the nature of the whole.
I don't want to say anything else.
Except today while running I saw two huge ducks on the lawn outside my old middle school. There are no bodies of water near the school. They were just standing there on the lawn looking around. I tried to get near them and they wouldn't let me. I don't blame them.

Final: 10 days 39k+ words
Day 10 @ 9:38 pm finished draft 1 of book. There are 39281 words. There will likely be another 500-800 in an appendix that I will create in the next week, and maybe also a second appendix that I have not fully gotten a hold of yet. I still have about a page of notes to apply and things to add or rearrange and edit.
I feel 'cleared' somewhat. I feel a lot better than I did 10 days ago when I started the book. I think I worked 8-10 hours a day nonstop at desk for 8 out of the 10 days and 5 hours on the other two. I feel exhausted but good.
Now I have to figure out what I want to 'do' with it.
I will think about this later.
Here is a pretty awesome article on the house in LOST HIGHWAY and Euripedes 'Medea', which actually jarred a lot of my thinking during the middle part of the novel, and is also where I stole the title I am still trying to convince myself to run with: THE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT IS COMPLETELY UNABLE TO BE COMMUNICATED.
I will probably, though, use: WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU
I am going to find a way to get David Lynch to blurb this book.
I will do it.
I will do it.
I will corner the David Lynch literary market.
Big fuckin titties.
I am going to stop talking about that man.
I also just wrapped up an interview with J'Lyn Chapman, who, damn, is interesting and know how to talk about her work. That will be forthcoming soon. I'm digging for new venues that do good literary interviews. It seems like so few people do those anymore. Any suggestions?

Blurbs & Blabs + Day 8 sidenote
BLAKE BUTLER ON MIKE YOUNG: "Mike Young's poetic teetaw caused a cosmic enjambment in my scrote, which once infected, defined a nation, and that nation was neon purple & made of email, and I left that nation with Mike Young's mother's mother, and Mike Young's mother's mother was the dude who scripted most of Legend of Zelda II."
MIKE YOUNG ON BLAKE BUTLER: "Blake Butler's synthesis of Lynchian hyperbole and didactic Wu-Tang skank tropes (in the Lacanian mode) causes readers to question anew our semiotic Dairy Queen panopticon. What Roland Barthes called "the grain of the voice" and Jeff Gordon called "I could've won if the other cars had just gotten out of my way" is embodied in Butler's spry, wedgie-tight narratives of American betrayal and disillusioned shopping cart races. Coming strong as dinosaur's breath from the Fugitive poet tradition, think of Butler as a modern day John Crowe Ransom with buck teeth, a penchant for "iced coffee" (in the Derridian sense of the phrase, more than a surface-level thirstiness and rather a concertedly diachronic poop-under-the-bridge aporia), and a finger up yo dirty brain nigguh."
FENCE nominated me for Best New Poets. They are allowed 2 nominations. That made me glow. Beyond an honor coming from such folks. TY, editors. Hot fuck action maximum. Titty licker.
Crunchy sumppump dicktease googoo.
Today is very good if filled with humming if a little rough around the edges if making me shake.
Still working on NOVEL for today. Results to post. (Late night update: There are now 33113 words. Figuring I will be done now around 40k.)
Did you know these things about LOST HIGHWAY:
- The Mystery Man never blinks during the entire film.
- In a recent interview, director Lynch confessed that Lost Highway and Twin Peaks take place in the same world.
- According to Lynch, the first scene in the film is based upon an incident which occurred in his own life. He says that early one morning, his intercom buzzed, and when he answered it a voice he didn't recognize said, "Dick Laurant is dead." However, by the time he got to the front of the house to look out the window, there was no-one outside.

MIKE YOUNG ON BLAKE BUTLER: "Blake Butler's synthesis of Lynchian hyperbole and didactic Wu-Tang skank tropes (in the Lacanian mode) causes readers to question anew our semiotic Dairy Queen panopticon. Day 7: Beirueareadlij
Day 7 @ 7:24pm there are 28627 words. I feel slightly better than yesterday as the energy of PART TWO is rather different from the first and is birthing babies in my sternum or something. I realized last night I haven't remembered any dreams since I started this which is unusual for me and a strange kind of silence.
This book is very 'bleak,' probably in parts more bleak and evil than anything I have written, but also I think funny. My funny, which is not always others' funny.
I feel like I am writing the closest thing to a Lynchian novel that I've seen. I feel like I am getting out all the 'evil' in me in this writing and when it is done (hopefully by Friday, first draft anyway) I will be expunged and good things are going to happen. I have a lot of evil to get out.
Today I want to call the novel: I AM THE ONLY BLACK GOD, which is an ODB lyric.
I tend to like to shoot myself in the foot, at least in the eyes of industry-types, though I think a lot of people would buy I AM THE ONLY BLACK GOD with a picture of an enormous antbed inside a living room or a child covered in mold on the cover.
I would buy the fuck out of that.
I would also buy a book with this cover:

No title. The picture is the title.
No matter what else I say in the future, the title of my novel is that picture forever.
Other things are about to happen.
My stuff is being packed and moved for me by some company the HOA hired. I was not allowed to pack or move my own stuff because they had a contract. They said I could come watch them pack my stuff. Tuesday I get to go watch them put it on a truck. I can choose between them putting it in a cubicle where I have 5 days to get it out or I can bring a truck for them to put it on and take it somewhere myself. Somebody from FEMA wants to inspect the place for the 3rd time now. They are waiting to see something in the walls unfold. They are waiting for me burst.

Day 6: P
Most of Saturday off. Wrote a little, edited a little. There are 24359 words. I feel sick. Something got inside me. Something. Tomorrow will wake up ready regardless of feel.
I'm not really aware of half of what I'm saying.
To those who have submitted Lamination Colony eBooks: I am behind on these and it might be a minute. I will read them all eventually without question, just please be patient. I will probably do next book as the summer is getting hottest. I've peeked at some. Many excellences. I am going to have to be decisive.
The story LYNETTE, YOUR UNIQUENESS in KISSED BY by Alexandra Chasin is one of the coolest stories I've read in a while.
Random sentence from today:
Across the street, the enormous box in the neighbor’s yard was changing shape.

Day 5: Bldsirue
Do a read on this story from Barrelhouse by Matt Bell. It fuses cultural object with mysticism in a new way, which is the kind of writing I've been most interested in lately. Excellent story. Matt's story from Caketrain 4 (I think it was 4) is also supremely killer.
Ryan Call sent me KISSED BY by Alexandra Chasin, which seems to have come like a key into a room at a perfect time in this time of Massive Heat.
At 4:50 pm today there are 22,698 words. Didn't crunch as many numbers today due to last night in the bath I figured out something important about the novel and its beginning and went back to adjust some things about the beginning and add on in certain places and delete/reword a couple key graphs. Then and this afternoon I finished what is now PART ONE of the novel. I will take a short breath tonight and maybe into tomorrow and then return at the door to PART TWO. There will be two parts and a brief introduction and maybe an appendix.
Sharon Tate and Krissy Taylor are in the book now. As is a girl who can see through other people's computer screens from her computer. As is a woman named Ribbit, Shawna, Santa, Ricky, Rick, Sandwich or Blake.
** Please read

Day 4: Anthill
9:31 pm there are 20,042 words spread over 72 pages and I am beginning to feel destroyed. I drank 7-8 cups of black coffee and my head is throbbing and my body is sore and I am beginning to think inside the book and the book is starting to feel evil, both in the writing and what is written, and what is not written but still there. I wrote all day today and did not get around to any of the ideas I have appended to the bottom of the MS. The book I think for now is going to be called WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU. In the book now there is a massive anthill. I did not watch anything last night or watch or reading anything today. I have now lost 6 pounds and run 10 miles. I did not really expect to find myself this absorbed in this project but now I am and now I am and now it's time to take a bath.

Day 3: BUBBERESE
Day 3 @ 9:50 PM there are 15,676 words. I am now saving the document with the name WHICH HOUSE IS OURS?, which is one of 4 working titles, none of which will likely get used. The other working titles are
WHERE AM I WHERE HAVE I BEEN WHERE ARE YOU
and
SOMEONE CAME INTO THE HOUSE LAST NIGHT
and
KNOCK ONCE IF YOU ARE THERE.
Yeah okay. Got a late start today after getting up at 9:45 to meet with FEMA again, as there are more things I can apply for and now that I am going to be out of my place another 2-3 months other options have opened. Spent a long time trying to find a specific hall leading to a specific elevator to a specific tiny portion of a large room where I met with a man who refused to let me fill out my application paper because there was no one there and he was bored. He wrote very slow and asked for information I have given FEMA 3-4 times at this point. Whichever. I will feel blessed if something comes of it.
Last night girlfriend and I watched THE BIRDS, which I hadn't seen since I was little at a friend's birthday party. It was much different than I remembered. I like the ending though. The ending made me think about other endings to other things.
Finished reading A NEW QUARANTINE WILL TAKE MY PLACE and started reading ACTUAL AIR by David Berman which was recommended to me a while ago.
Strong news and motions underlying in several ways have me feeling very positive about things.
This 10-15 day novel may end up being much longer than my original aim of 30,000 words as on day 3 I'm already past the halfway mark on that number and the short list of notes I have for things forthcoming keeps getting longer and longer and longer and most of what I've written to this point is stripped and could be expanded with a lot of weird meat.
There is a couple in the book with a very thin man and a woman wearing a veil.
William Gass's THE TUNNEL is in the book, as is a magazine called ENORMOUS WOMEN.
As is Braille wallpaper and a very long hallway.
ENORMOUS WOMEN might be a good title.
I also thought about THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK PART 2, though Harmony Korine already made a short film with that title. MEIN KAMPF 2?
Couldn't sleep to save my life last night. Two nights in a row now. Massive insomnia return since I started this project. I've also lost 4 pounds.
Listened to IT TAKES A MILLION YEARS TO BECOME DIAMONDS SO LET'S JUST BURN LIKE COAL UNTIL THE SKY'S BLACK by Storm & Stress over and over for about an hour today while writing. It's hard to write to most music. That song is on the Lamination Colony mix that you can download from the site.
I am going to watch TOP CHEF and then keep writing or pass out.

Day 2 etc.
Today is the second day of my 10-15 day novel. Today at 6:11 PM I have 10,282 words. I started today at 11:00 and took a break to go running again. I drank a whole pot of coffee and ate some dried cranberries and bran cookies and a couple handfuls of oatmeal cereal. I am hungry now and feel very buzzed out. I am going to go eat four turkey dogs with a little Mexican cheese and hot sauce and then I may either stop for the day or keep going. I wrote more today in less time than yesterday.
This novel is beginning to take form. I feel energized writing each sentence. I do not feel like I am writing shit I will have to delete. I am finding things out while I am writing.
The novel is about a house. There is a family in the house and none of them know what is going on. The mother mows the lawn over and over again. The family members get lost in the house. The 8 year old son has a red cell phone that receives phone calls. The mailbox fills up with things and receives packages.
I think the house may be the same house as in the beginning of LOST HIGHWAY.
Last night I watched INLAND EMPIRE until the part where Laura Dern goes into the room full of women and they talk to her and then she goes through the window to Poland.
When she went to Poland I turned the movie off and tried to go to sleep but couldn't for several hours.
I am reading Johannes Goransson's A NEW QUARANTINE WILL TAKE MY PLACE. I like it a lot.
I think this novel is also connected to Ol Dirty Bastard's NIGGA PLEASE. I think NIGGA PLEASE was recorded in a very short time also.
The working title for NIGGA PLEASE was BLACK MAN IS GOD, THE WHITE MAN IS THE DEVIL.
I wish I could name my novel that.
People are very sensitive.
My ebook/chapbook PRETEND I AM THERE BUT VERY LITTLE will be released this Friday. It looks really nice, I am very happy with it. Adam Robinson is doing some really awesome things with Publishing Genius which you can read about on his blog.
I will post links to it when it goes up and I think you will be able to order print copies for $4 or there will be an option to print them yourself. It will also feature original artwork by Lauren Bender.
There are other things coming up to talk about.

nonexistent novel excerpt
An excerpt from my unfinished and currently by the wayside novel INVISIBLE ERRORS is now live up at WANDERING ARMY. The novel is about an accused pedophile who is not really a pedophile. This excerpt is from somewhere in the middle. I don't know if I'll ever finish the novel. I don't know if I'll ever finish anything. Or that anything can be finished. Or that birds eat seed.
Read it here: What I've Been and Where I'm Going and Would You Like Your Sandwich Toasted?.
To receive this publication, I ruined everything else in my life forever.
